Majestic Culture Hub

About us

Bringing art and community together under one roof

The Majestic Culture Hub is a new space for Zanzibar’s creative sector born out of the collaboration between island’s key cultural actors and their desire to save and bring back to life the last, purpose built cinema in Stone Town.

The Majestic Cinema is an art deco gem that opened its doors to the public in 1954. Over the years it has provided the community with entertainment and spaces for social gatherings. But the steady decline in visitor numbers since the late 1980s has also led to a gradual degradation of the building which is currently at risk of collapsing.

Our Story So far!

The ongoing transformation of the building is part of a Public Private Partnership agreement between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and Hifadhi Zanzibar. The PPP contract was signed in late 2023 and, the keys to the building were handed over in January 2024. Since then, the buildings has have been cleaned and a technical assessment of its condition has started. Funds for the initial works were provided by UNESCO (via the governments of Japan and Saudi Arabia) and CHiFA the official project launch took place was organized in May 2024.
