Majestic Culture Hub

For over two decades, the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) has brought the magic of storytelling to the island, transforming Zanzibar into a hub for East African cinema. At the heart of this legacy lies the Majestic Cinema, a historic venue that, despite its crumbling roof and weathered walls, has hosted ZIFF’s vibrant screenings and workshops, drawing thousands to Stone Town each year. On [insert date, e.g., August 2025], ZIFF’s legacy takes a bold step forward as the Majestic embarks on a new chapter as a revitalized cultural hub.

From its early days as the Royal Cinema Theatre in the 1920s to its art deco rebirth in 1955, the Majestic has been more than a cinema—it’s been a gathering place for Zanzibaris to share stories, dreams, and ideas. ZIFF’s director, Martin Mhando, recognized its potential in 2010, launching efforts to restore the venue as a beacon for filmmakers and artists. Today, with the support of Hifadhi Zanzibar and partners like Busara Promotions and the Zanzibar Renaissance Literary Society, the Majestic is being reborn. Recent ZIFF programs, including a filmmaking workshop led by Tanzanian filmmaker Takura Maurayi, have already breathed life into the space, equipping local talent with skills to tell their stories. As the cinema prepares to host year-round screenings, a temporary Reading Room celebrates Zanzibari writers, while plans for a 500-seat multipurpose venue promise to make the Majestic a cornerstone of ZIFF’s mission to inspire and connect. This is more than a restoration—it’s a celebration of Zanzibar’s storytelling heritage, ready to shine on the global stage.

Recently, ZIFF set up their office for their Festivals at the Majestic Office and run all their operations, including planning, team meetings, and many more. For Majestic this is an achievement as it marks its ongoing support for the community and to ZIFF as partners.
